Cozumel, 2001
Cozumel is overrated. Or maybe we're just jaded from all of
those trips to the Cayman Islands. We've heard so many divers say
that Cozumel is one of the best dive locations in the Caribbean, so we
just had to go there. The dives were O.K. We had a great time.
But
with three or four cruise ship loads of new tourists coming and going
every day, I'd say that Cozumel has lost it's charm. Too bad I
didn't get to see it a few years ago. The diving was fun, of course,
but the reefs looked beat up, the visibility was about what you'd find in
the Florida Keys, and the currents are unpredictable, fickle, and
dangerous.
Tikal was fantastic. We saw a little bit of Guatemala on our way to Tikal. The ruins are awesome, but we also saw monkeys, parrots, toucans, and other weird flora and fauna.
Cancun has grown beyond belief since the last time we were there in the mid '80's, but appears to be thriving on the tourist money and is, for the most part, a nice clean city.
Isla de Mujeres is also not the same place it was 15 years ago, but the diving there was as good, if not better, than in Cozumel.
