Cruise Boats
| The cruise
boats really like Cozumel. At one
time, there were 7 boats docked. It
makes for a real zoo in town when that many people land at once. There are two piers for the boats. In order to create the international pier and provide a
relatively deep harbor, they had to blast a significant portion of one of the
reefs. It was a controversial move
locally, but it sure opened up the island for the boats and tourism.
Not only do the cruise boats call here, there is also a ferry from the
mainland every half hour or so. There
are a lot of day visitors from that source.
After the boats leave and the sun goes down, the island settles down a
lot.

The folks
off the boats seemed to shop, visit the beaches and snorkel. Apparently it's not too easy to arrange for a dive on a
cruise, so not many people do that. The
divers all seemed to be staying on the island.

Debbie and
I arrived in
Cancun a couple of
days before everyone else.
We took a first-class bus from Cancun
to Playa de Carmen, which lies
about 45 miles south.
Playa is a beautiful place
with
white sand beaches just like Cancun,
but a little upscale. Although the cruise ships don't land at Playa,
they do send
ferry loads of
cruisers over from Cozumel. If you have a high speed link, take a look
at this clip and you'll se what it was like!
